Juicing For Life

As I prepare to juice some fresh fruits and vegetables for a friend, I thought about you all, my valued readers. People often negate the benefits of juicing for many different reasons, but they shouldn’t.  Drinking fresh fruits and vegetables on a consistent basis can have a profound impact on your overall health.

I know that some of you may be apprehensive about juicing because you think that it is too expensive or extremely time consuming. However, when it comes to good health, we have to be willing to make the necessary sacrifices. Juicing doesn’t have to be expensive. You can get a juicer from a friend or family member that may no longer be using theirs. For a long time I used an old, small hand me down juicer from my grandmother. Now it wasn’t the best juicer or the most efficient, but at the end of the day I had a way to prepare healthy, nutrient dense drinks for our household. You can also check out discount sites like www.amazon.com to find smaller, less expensive juicers.

I usually take 2 hours a week to juice fresh fruit and vegetable juices for me and my family. You get the most nutrition value out of fresh juices within the first 24 hours of consumption, but most fresh juices will retain good nutrient value for 2-3 days after juicing, this is why I juice twice per week.  Some may say, “Wow a whole hour of juicing, I can’t do that?” Although, when you weigh the health benefits against 2 hours of your time, it’s so worth it. Think about it this way, a week is comprised of 168 hours, I am simply suggesting that you take 2 hours out of that time to help add quality and value to your life!

There is so much more information that I want to share with you as it relates to juicing. Therefore, I will be sure to write more on this subject in the weeks to come. I hope this information will encourage you to try something new to help you take your health to the next level on purpose, with purpose! I would love to hear about your adventures in juicing. Feel free to comment below this post to share!

I Pledge Allegiance to My Health

Lately I have been doing a lot of studying on health and nutrition and have come to the realization that as a nation we are really unhealthy. Ok, let me back up for a moment. I actually already knew this, but I guess I am starting to see it in a different light. As of late I have become increasingly more aware of the way that our environment affects our eating habits. Be it a television ad, an internet advertisement or suggestions from friends and family, our diets are influenced in ways that many of us don’t even realize.

I wish that we could simply replace the negative information with positive information. People naturally navigate towards doing the things that they see and hear the most as it relates to behaviors and preferences. Every once in a while I will hear an advertisement promoting healthy eating habits (more produce and water/less saturated fats and sugars), but they are really far and few between. It would be great if we could turn on the television, internet or radio and be bombarded with healthy ads, but will this ever happen?

It seems that as long as our culture is centered around money and power, this may never be the case. The bottom line is that billions of dollars are made and spent annually as a result of poor health. Whether it be the local fast food restaurant selling fat and sugar filled foods or the pharmaceutical companies profiting off of bad health, we are in a lose-lose situation.

I don’t have all the answers, but I do want to take the necessary steps to ensure a better tomorrow. We all can make a small difference that could lead to great change. If we simply make a pledge to ourselves and our families to make better and healthier life choices, we can ensure that we are moving forward to a better tomorrow. Will you take the pledge?

If so, simply say these words out loud…  My health is important to me and today I, ____________, make a decision to make healthier choices. Starting today I pledge to: Eat more healthy meals/snacks & less junk food; eat more fruits and vegetables; plus drink more water. It is time for us to take control of our future health before it takes control of us. Here’s to a healthier and happier tomorrow!

The Healthier Choice

I recently had a conversation with one of my friends regarding school aged, low income children and their eating habits. In the midst of our conversation she made a few comments that really left something for me to later ponder. She explained that there are many children in her organization whom are forced to make food choices simply based on what they can scrounge up at a relative/neighbors home or what they can afford to purchase with the remaining balance on their mothers TANF card (aka food stamps). This didn’t surprise me much, simply because I can remember this being the case in our neighborhood as a child. Although, the conversation prompted me to want to take a closer look at this phenomenon.

I am really concerned about the eating habits of our children along with the fact that most of our school systems do a really poor job at providing healthy food options for our growing future leaders of America. When Jaime Oliver’s “Food Revolution” was in production, I loved the way in which he attempted to bring awareness to the American school system. Unfortunately, he was regularly faced with unyielding bureaucracy and negative attitudes. I would love to have an opportunity to see his alternatives and suggestions implemented.

There are so many children who fall victim to their parents’ poor eating habits. Therefore, having healthy food provisions at school could greatly influence these children and their families to make healthier food choices. It seems that for now implementing healthier food options for breakfast and lunch in the school system may prove to be a difficult and daunting task.

This is why I am working so hard to speak at as many schools as possible to push for a better plate and future for our children. Feel free to contact me at spressonline@yahoo.com if you would like to book me to speak with a group of children and/or parents at your local school, PTA, afterschool program or in any other setting. Please take the time to educate yourselves and others about making healthier food selections; your life literally depends on it!
